International Coach Federation (IFC) has identified the following as the Coaching Core Competencies and Ethics. As a member of the IFC I keep my practice within these guidelines.
Core Competencies:
1. Meeting ethical guidelines and professional standards
2. Establishing the coaching agreement
3. Establishing trust and intimacy with the client
4. Coaching presence
5. Active listening
6. Powerful questioning
7. Direct Communication
8. Creating awareness
9. Designing actions
10.Planning and goal setting
11.Managing progress and accountability
Code of Ethics:
Definitions From Part One, Section 1:
Definition of Coaching: Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
Professional Coaching Relationship: A professional coaching relationship exists when coaching includes a business agreement or contract that defines the responsibilities of each party.
ICF Professional Coach: An ICF Professional Coach also agrees to practice the ICF Professional Core Competencies and pledges accountability to the ICF Code of Ethics.
